冗長な（redundant）表現：bandほか

早速ですが、redundantな他の具体例を挙げてみます。紫字はネイティブチェッカーのコメントです。

１．

I joined a music band at high school.

　↓

I joined a music band at high school.

A “music band” sounds redundant. (Most bands are involved with music).

２．

You say you play the flute, but we don’t have a music band. We only have a guitar club.

　↓

You say you play the flute, but we don’t have a music band. We only have a guitar club.

‘Music band’ -> ‘band’ as ‘music’ is redundant.

３．

They defended for the rest of the game and won the victory.

　↓

They defended for the rest of the game and won the victory.

You could probably delete “the victory”. Seems redundant (a victory = win).

４．単語レベルではなくこんな表現レベルも。

This is one of the traditional Japanese clothes made in Japan.

　↓

This is traditional Japanese clothing. –OR– This is traditional clothing made in Japan.

“Japanese ... made in Japan” sounds a little redundant.

冗長な（redundant）表現：wave

ネイティブチェックで、修正理由としてredundantとあると、表現が冗長だからということです。

実際によく見る日本人の英文から一つ例を見てみましょう。

When I saw Jane on the street, I waved my hand to her.

文法的には間違っているように見えませんが、例えば、waveを英英で調べると、

to move your hand or arm from side to side in the air in order to attract attention, say hello, etc [OALD]

とあります。つまり、waveはすでに「手」の意味を含んでいるので、「手を振る」をwave my handとするとredundant（冗長）なのです。上記の英文だと..., I waved to[at] her.で十分なわけですね。

さて、このwaveという単語を他の英英辞典でも見てみましょう。

to raise your arm and move your hand from side to side in order to make someone notice you [LDCE]

to raise your hand and move it up and down or from side to side, for example to say hello or goodbye to someone who is not near you [Random house: Webster’s easy English dictionary]

to move your hand backwards and forwards [Chambers: primary dictionary]

Randomはノンネイティブ初級者用をターゲットとしており、Chambersは特に７歳以上対象のネイティブ用辞典です。

こうやって比較すると、一つの単語でもいろんな語義があって面白いですよね。

ちなみに、本書ではwave（自動詞）は以下のように書いてあります。

①[vi] You wave (= move your hand) when you say hello or goodbye to someone.

The man waved at me.

Wave to the children!

NOTE: You don’t need to say “wave my hand.” Wave includes “one’s hand,”
